Business Start-Up? Seize The Day!
Social media is full of success stories showcasing how regular people take an idea for a business, act on it (often starting at their kitchen table), and journey forward, successfully living their dreams. So why not you? If you have been hoping and wishing to start a business from home, but find yourself mired in muck (making a plan, then a plan for the plan, investors for the planning and so on), perhaps it’s time to leap into action, and see where the results take you? Here’s inspiration for putting one foot in front of the other.
From Soap Bombs, To Hot Chocolate Bombs, To…
Like many, Kiana Gomes started baking during the COVID pandemic. Finding that cakes were fun to make but challenging for sustaining a business, she borrowed inspiration from her previous job (think soap bombs at the mall), and got into the hot chocolate bomb trend, literally earning about $60k from her kitchen table in a four month period from November-February, with the help of her family. Then, suddenly, poof—business petered out. Not to be deterred, Gomes kept exploring, and with a boost on Dragon’s Den, her business, Cocktail Bomb Shop, was born. Here’s how the business and its success story are explained on LinkedIn:
- At Cocktail Bomb Shop, we blend creativity, sparkle, and a dash of magic to transform the ordinary cocktail experience into something extraordinary. Founded in Montreal, Quebec, by a passionate entrepreneur inspired during a challenging time, our brand has quickly evolved from a kitchen experiment into a celebrated innovation in the beverage industry.
- Our journey began unexpectedly, amidst the global challenges of 2020. Transitioning from baking custom cakes to experimenting with the viral sensation of hot chocolate bombs, we stumbled upon a gap in the adult beverage market. Months of dedicated testing and a sprinkle of edible glitter later, the Cocktail Bomb was born. Not just a product, but a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of social media, our Cocktail Bomb went viral, capturing the hearts and palates of many.
At Sage, when asked for her “top tip for anyone who is thinking about starting a business or maybe in the very early stages,” Gomes emphasizes the importance of actually taking action, noting:
- I see a lot of people, they’re writing a business plan, they’re trying to plan things, they’re like, “Okay, first I need to get money, whatever, to start my business.” But I feel like they’re too invested in the plan and not on the action. So, because they just never take any action, nothing ends up ever happening and I literally see this all the time.
- People tell me like, “Oh, I’m going to start a business, I’m going to do this, I’m going to do that” they don’t do anything. I don’t think they’re ever going to do anything because they’re too involved in their plan….But by doing nothing and just planning it in your head, you’re not going to get anywhere.
- And also…when naming your business, maybe try and name it something that is not product specific so you can easily expand.
