Home Health Care: Over One Million Jobs!

03.04.2022

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 1,129,000 more home health care aides will be needed between now and 2030. That represents growth of nearly 33% in the field, as our population ages. Importantly, home health aides make it possible for so many of us to realize a dearly held goal: living in our own homes as long as possible.

Welcome In

That’s what relieved families say when home health care agencies assign an aide. In fact, home health care aides often say it is the welcoming smiles and knowledge that they are making a difference that keep them going, despite the challenges of the job. As the executive director of Home Care Aide in Massachusetts says,“You come into a lot of awkward situations…You’re in the home by yourself, so you have to think on your feet and be comfortable meeting a lot of new people.”

Home health care agencies and networks across the country are busily recruiting and training for the huge wave of aides needed—now and over the next decade. U.S. News explains:

Most aides have a high school diploma, although this degree is not required for the position. Aides at agencies that receive funding from Medicare or Medicaid must get a minimum level of training and pass a competency evaluation or receive state certification. The requirements for certification vary by state and often include formal training at community colleges or vocational schools. Home health aides can also be certified by the National Association for Home Care & Hospice, which involves 75 hours of training and passing a written exam. Training tasks include housekeeping chores such as cooking for clients who have special dietary needs, learning how to treat infections and basic safety techniques like emergency readiness.

Important to Know: Home Health Care Bonds

It’s common for state licensing agencies to require home care businesses to obtain a home health care license bond. This surety bond guarantees that the company will operate according to all applicable rules and regulations. Sometimes a home health care service fidelity bond is required. This covers a home health care service company and customers in the event of dishonest or fraudulent actions by employees.
