A Licensing Guide for South Carolina Residential Builders

01.28.2020

In South Carolina, home builders must follow specific steps in order to be officially licensed and carry out future projects. Though the licensing process for residential builders can be relatively simple, there are critical events you must prepare for, including passing examinations. Below we’ve laid out the licensing requirements for South Carolina residential builders.

How to Become a Licensed Residential Builder

In South Carolina, home builders must obtain a Certificate of Authorization from the Residential Builders Commission. This license should be renewed on June 30th during even-number years. Builders can complete their registration online every two years.

We’ve laid out the crucial steps residential builders should complete prior to receiving the Certificate of Authorization.

  • File Residential Home Builders License Application
  • Pay a $100 application processing fee
  • Submit an affidavit of eligibility
  • Submit proof of no less than one year of relevant work experience within the past five years
  • Pass a PSI examination
  • Pay the home builder license fee. This can be $80 for a license issued for 12 months or less, or $160 for a license issued for greater than 12 months.

How Long is the Application Process?

Typically, all applications are reviewed by the Residential Builders Commission within 7-10 business days. You can always check the status of your application online. If your application is rejected, it will be returned to you.
