Surety Bond Basics

What a surety bond is, how to get one, and how to choose the right surety company. Questions? Call 800-221-3662 or email commdept@colonialsurety.com.

What is a surety bond?

A surety bond is a guarantee that you will do what the law or a contract requires. It is an agreement between three parties:

The principal is you, the person or business that buys the bond.

The surety is the company that guarantees you, such as Colonial Surety Company.

The obligee is the government agency, court or client that requires the bond.

If you don’t meet your obligations and someone suffers a loss, the surety pays the valid claim, up to the bond amount. You then repay the surety. In short, the bond protects the obligee, not you.
