The demand for new and expanded health and science facilities remains strong across the country. Up and coming projects include an addition to the Medical School at New Jersey’s Rowan University and important renovations at Ohio State University’s Goss Laboratory.
Thinking Expansively In New Jersey
Southern New Jersey’s Rowan University is home to the state’s only osteopathic medical school, and, its leadership takes “great pride in being able to provide high quality, team-based specialized services to our South Jersey neighbors who might not have access to this type of care.” As a local public official emphasizes, expansion plans are important in the region: “Today, Rowan is among the top 100 public research universities in the nation, and Rowan College of South Jersey is the state’s most forward-looking community college. Their partnership has led not only to a new model for higher education, but now is demonstrating how to bring much-needed specialized medical services to communities in need.”
Garrison Architects will design Rowan University’s entirely new medical training facility and announcement of a winning contractor is eagerly anticipated. As School Construction News reports:
The Rowan Medicine Center–Cumberland will focus on the mental and physical health of families around South Jersey, specifically along the Route 55 corridor. The two-story Rowan Medicine Center–Cumberland will contain over 17,000 square feet of educational and medical space. In addition to areas for medical students to practice working with patients, the new facility will focus heavily on addiction and recovery treatment. The facility will also host the Child Abuse Research Education and Service Institute (CARES).

Life Science Facilities:More Please
Spurred by the pandemic, the demand for modern new life science buildings, like labs, across the country, continues, with no signs of stopping anytime soon. In Memphis, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is growing—by the billions and Michigan Medicine has ambitious construction plans too. In New York, Skanska has a $448 million contract with the New York City Economic Development Corporation to construct a massive new public health lab in Harlem. Replacing an outdated lab further downtown, the new structure will include five lab floors, five administrative floors, an auditorium and a training lab.
Builders in Ohio are busy with life science facilities too. School Construction News reports that the Buckeye State’s own Pepper Construction will be tackling an important renovation at Ohio State University’s Goss Laboratory in Columbus. The 7,500 square foot project will involve “redoing the HVAC system, repainting, updating floors and ceilings, as well as installing a machine for the sterilization of various lab instruments.” As Paul Francois, President of Pepper Construction Company shares: “We are honored to serve such a prominent organization dedicated to cancer research and are excited to play a part in providing a newly renovated laboratory for the talented Ohio State research professionals and students…”
